Bio-LNG – Climate-friendly fuel from regional production
LNG.Agentur Niedersachsen (c/o MARIKO GmbH) invites to the 2nd workshop “Bio-LNG”
Online workshop. Bio-LNG is a particularly climate-friendly fuel that can supplement and substitute fossil LNG in the future. Although widespread production and supply of bio-LNG is currently possible, it is associated with challenges. In the production of bio-LNG, the liquefaction process represents a key component.
Michael Kralemann from the 3N Competence Center Lower Saxony Network Renewable Resources and Bioeconomy e.V. clarified in his keynote speech on the topic of “Decentralized vs. centralized liquefaction” that liquefaction technologies are now available in a wide performance spectrum. Accordingly, liquefaction directly at a biogas plant only makes sense if a capacity of at least 500 kWel, but preferably more than 1 MWel, is available.
Alternatives are an interconnection of several biogas plants or the transmission in the public gas grid to a large-scale plant. Such a centralized generation shows significant economies of scale, but requires at the biogas plant to feed into the public gas grid.
In short presentations, four liquefaction plant manufacturers presented their technologies, each operating with different processes, and options for biogas plant operators. In summary, it was noted that decentralized and centralized liquefaction are not in competition, as demand for bio-LNG is high. They complement each other in providing climate-friendly bio-LNG.
Finally, a short discussion session was held with the audience and plant manufacturers. The desire to deepen value creation in rural areas became clear; on the other hand, the production and marketing of bio-LNG represent a novel and complex business sector.
The online workshop was conducted by LNG.Agentur Niedersachsen (Office MARIKO GmbH) in cooperation with Fachverband Biogas e.V., 3N Kompetenzzentrum Niedersachsen Netzwerk Nachwachsende Rohstoffe und Bioökonomie e.V. and Landesverband Erneuerbare Energien Niedersachsen / Bremen e.V..
