Fuel conversion & sulfur limit 2020 – first experience reports
Low sulfur fuels (VLSFO – very low sulfur fuel oil) are a solution to the sulfur limits in force since January. The use of these fuels was reported during an online conference on 28 October 2020. The event was organized by Kompetenzzentrum GreenShipping Niedersachsen. The challenges associated with its use are manifold, which is why experiences with alternatives such as LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) were also presented. In addition, speakers reported on the use of methanol and hydrogen as fuel alternatives as well as on fuel savings through the use of additional wind propulsion systems.
In summary, a number of factors lead to the need in 2020 to focus more on fuel management and to address the causes of existing problems rather than just addressing the problems themselves. In addition, it must be ensured that standards for existing solutions are created and consistently applied. Renewable energies and the associated energy transition, including in shipping, must be given greater focus in order to create the basis for emission-free maritime transport.
