LNG remains the fuel of choice!
The network partners of the LNG.Agentur Niedersachsen discussed the importance of and required political action for the application of LNG in the frame of an online event on the 18th of May 2021
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) currently represents a significant option for reducing emissions not only in the area of mobility, but also in industry. Compared to alternative energy sources, LNG is already available and usable today, while the LNG network partners estimate that it will still take years to produce fuels from renewable sources in sufficient quantities.
“The energy requirements of shipping are underestimated,” states Christian Hoepfner of Wessels Marine GmbH. “If we wanted to operate a container ship the size of the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE with 23,000 TEU with renewable energy alone, that would require the use of about 55 wind turbines with 5 MW capacity each per year.” “We have to remain realistic,” confirms Werner Repenning of Niedersachsen Ports. “As long as renewable energy is not available to a sufficient extent, we will have to resort to fossil energy. Hydrogen is not a universal solution – on the contrary: if the hydrogen does not come from green sources, its climate footprint is incomparably worse than that of LNG.” “There is a need for a scientifically proven, objective statement of the carbon footprint of the different energy sources so that the fuel debate does not become a war of faith,” notes Ramona Zettelmaier of Bureau Veritas, calling for a “well-to-tank and tank-to-propeller analysis.”
On the basis of this, certificates of origin could be drawn up and issued, which, according to Dr. Christoph Merkel of Merkel Energy, could contribute significantly to making the fuel market more transparent. In order to push CO2 reduction, a CO2 tax is also called for, because – according to the unanimous assessment of the network partners: “The market won’t decarbonize on its own.” This taxation would also help the use of bio LNG to become increasingly established, leading to a further improvement in the environmental balance.
These and other topics will continue to be addressed by the LNG.Agentur Niedersachsen in the future. Interested companies and institutions are cordially invited to join the network.
